Free access is useful here, but mainly as a trial, not a full experience. Most apps let you test onboarding, browse characters, and see the general tone before the hard limits appear. The catch is that memory depth, longer sessions, voice, premium personas, or faster replies often sit behind the subscription wall.
That is not automatically a deal-breaker. We would rather see a free tier that honestly previews the product than one that looks generous but cripples the bot right when you test persistence. What matters is whether you can learn enough before paying: does the character stay coherent, are the filters stricter than advertised, and can you verify the basic privacy controls?
If a free tier cannot answer those questions, we treat that as a weakness. In this category, the first thing worth paying for is usually continuity, not bells and whistles.
